A man vanishes from Crooked Creek Ranch without a note, without a goodbye, leaving behind only an empty bunk and a Mustang that returns at dawn with blood matted into its mane.

Hank Dawson has run this ranch for thirty five years. He has hired every kind of drifter and stray the mountains can produce, but Eli Vance was the rare one he trusted like family.
