This is a tutorial for creating shaped bokeh from Christmas lights using a DSLR camera.

This works best with a wide aperture lens - Up to f2.8 is ideal.

This will probably still work with other lenses, but not as well, and some of the paper will show in your photograph - so you will have to crop it. I took the images and video in this using a f5.6 aperture lens, it still works - but I had to crop the video and photographs significantly to take out the paper.

Also, the less wide aperture your lens is, the smaller your shape must be. As you can see when I tape it onto the camera, the shape is very, very small (half a centimeter or less for f5.6).

If you are unsure of whether your lens will work, it's definitely worth a try to find out! You just need black paper, tape, and a hole punch or xacto knife. It will probably won't work right away and will take some experimenting to get the right effect, so keep trying!

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert on this subject or photography. I just wanted to make this video to show people who have never seen this technique before, so they could try it, too. Feel free to look up other, more in depth, tutorials!
