Dr. Paul Jaffe, an electronics engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) may have found a way to power the earth by collecting energy from space. How does it work? Solar panels (via a solar satellite) in space absorb energy from the sun that then gets beamed directly to Earth -- pretty simple concept, much harder to execute -- but Dr. Jaffe is making it happen. This technology, if successfully implemented, could benefit our warfighters operating in remote regions around the world, where access to fuel is often limited, thus providing them with a constant supply of energy.

Dr. Paul Jaffe: We are actually making palpable changes in our world that are going to affect people for a long time. I am Paul Jaffe, I am an electronics engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory. I help develop electronics for space craft and experimental space technologies.

The Navy in particular is heavily dependent on fossil fuels to accomplish its mission. SO anything we can do to wean ourselves away from that is likely to be helpful. So these are two of the prototypes that we’ve put together you can see on the top layer that we have solar cells. These convert the sunlight into electricity. Then the second layer in the middle is the electronics that convert the electricity that comes from the solar cells into the radio waves. And then the bottom layer is the antenna and that transmits the energy back to the earth. To make the actual satellite e you would take 100 or thousands of these and put them in a big array, perhaps a big disk, and then that would form the whole antenna to send all of the energy down to the earth.

One of the overriding motivations for me as a parent is I want a great world for my kids to grow up in and for their kids and for many generations.
