Dr. Hossein Rafiei Renani, PEng, Geotechnical & Rock Mechanics Consultant, Klohn Crippen Berger (Vancouver), presents his talk "Stability analysis of slopes, dams, and open pits".

Abstract: Natural slopes, road cuts, embankments, hydroelectric and tailings dams, and open pit mines range in height from a few meters to nearly one kilometer. Analyzing the stability of these structures is among the responsibilities of geotechnical engineers. Although the scale and functionality of these structures vary considerably, the approaches used for evaluating their stability share many similarities. In this presentation, limit equilibrium and shear strength reduction methods of stability analysis and their application to geotechnical design will be discussed. Common design acceptance criteria for various applications will be presented. Benefits of probabilistic stability analysis for incorporating uncertainties and risk-based design will be illustrated. Recent developments for incorporating strain softening behavior in stability analysis will be discussed. Finally, some lessons learned from investigation of past failure will be shared.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Rafiei Renani is a geotechnical and rock mechanics consultant currently working with Klohn Crippen Berger in Vancouver. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering and a master’s degree in rock mechanics and holds a doctorate in geotechnical engineering from the University of Alberta. He has over 10 years of experience in analysis, design and monitoring of major civil and mining structures in Canada, United States, South America, Europe, and Asia. His research on rock mass characterization, failure criteria, advanced numerical modelling and probabilistic analysis has been published in over 20 peer-reviewed journal and international conference papers. He has served as a technical reviewer for several international journals and major engineering projects.
