The Middleport Flour Mill.

The Middleport Flour Mill was also known as Port Vale Mill, started operating around 1844. It was strategically located along the Trent & Mersey Canal. Initially owned by Samuel Fitton, the mill quickly became a significant player in the local milling industry during the 1840s. Under Fitton’s leadership, the mill not only processed grain but also became a major employer and a prominent feature of Middleport’s industrial landscape.

The Middleport Flint Mill and Calcining Works

Established in the late 19th century, played a crucial role in the pottery industry. This sector was central to the region’s economic and cultural identity. The mill, especially under the management of Goodwin’s Mill Co. from 1907 onwards, specialized in a fundamental process in pottery making called calcining.
