BELOMORSK, Russia. The White Sea and Baltics Canal. Ancient Petroglyphs. Hydroelectricity. VLOG

Belomorsk is the town in the Republic of Karelia of Russia. It is located in the place where Vyg river meets the White Sea.

Belomorsk is 500km south from Murmansk and 300 north of Petrozavodsk, the capital city of Karelia.

First mentions about Belomorsk were yet in 1419 when it was called Sorokka. In 1429 to Sorokka came Zosima, German and Savvaty Solovetsky, reverends of Russian church. Solovetskys came here to move further to the islands in the White Sea that to found a Monastery there.

Now both islands and monastery known as Solovetsky islands and Solovetsky Monastery which are one of the most remote but unique and most beautiful places of Russia.

Meanwhile, in the newest history, Belomorsk is known as the start point for The White Sea and Baltics Canal which is 227km long and connecting The White Sea and Lake Onega (Volga and Baltics Route).

The White Sea and Baltics canal was a part of a great Communistic Constructions. It was built for a record time of 2 years. The construction went from 1931 to 1933 and for the first time in the history of USSR used the labour of GULAG prisoners. Officially 108,000 prisoners participated in the construction of The White Sea and Baltics Canal.

Vyg is a very fast river. So it’s successfully used for the “Vygostrovslaya Hydroelectricity (Vygostrovskaya Water Power Plant)” which is having two turbines and gives 20 Megawatts each. It was launched in 1961.

Another interesting thing is located around Belomorsk in the place called Zalavruga - “Belomorsk Petroglyphs” archeological complex (also known as “The White Sea Petroglyphs”)

Petroglyphs are an images created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving, or abrading, as a form of rock art.

In Zalavruga discovered about 2000 petroglyphs made approximately 5000-7000 years ago.
