In the beginning was Adam, whose name means Man, earthborn. From him came Seth, the one Appointed, and then Enosh, who was Mortal and frail. After him was Kenan, which means Possession, yet in his days the cry of Mahalalel was lifted, for his name means Praise of God.

Through Jared, meaning Descent, came Enoch, whose name means Dedicated, and he walked with the Lord. After him was Methuselah, meaning When he dies, it shall be sent, a prophecy in itself. Then came Lamech, meaning Powerful, conqueror, and from him was born Noah, whose name means Rest and comfort.

Noah fathered three: Shem, whose name means Name or Fame, Ham, meaning Hot or Dark, and Japheth, meaning Expansion and Enlargement. From them the nations spread, each line carrying the story of man into the corners of the earth.

From Japheth came Gomer, Completion, Magog, Land of Gog, Madai, Middle Land, Javan, Wine, Tubal, Brought, Meshech, Drawing out, and Tiras, Desire. Their descendants filled the northern isles and distant shores, scattering as a witness to mankind’s wandering.

From Ham came Cush, whose name means Black, Mizraim, meaning Egypt or Double Straits, Put, Bow or Affliction, and Canaan, Lowland or Merchant. From Cush was born Nimrod, whose name itself means We will rebel, the mighty hunter who set his kingdom against the Lord.

But from Shem came Elam, Eternity or Hidden, Asshur, Plain or Assyria, Arphaxad, Healer or Releaser, Lud, Strife, and Aram, Exalted or Highland. From Arphaxad came Shelah, Sent Out, then Eber, Beyond or Crossing Over, the father of the Hebrews. In his day the world was divided through Peleg, whose name means Division. His line continued through Reu, Friend or Shepherd, then Serug, Intertwined Branch, then Nahor, Snorting or Hot, then Terah, Delay or Station, and finally Abram, Abraham, whose name means Exalted Father, Father of Many.

From Abraham came two paths. From Ishmael, whose name means God Hears, came twelve princes: Nebaioth, Heights; Kedar, Dark; Adbeel, Disciplined of God; Mibsam, Fragrance; Mishma, Hearing; Dumah, Silence; Massa, Burden; Hadad, Thunderer; Tema, Desert; Jetur, Defense; Naphish, Refreshed; and Kedemah, East. Their names tell of wandering in silence, burden, desert, and shadow, outside the covenant yet still under God’s hearing.

From Abraham’s concubine Keturah, whose name means Incense or Fragrance, came sons named Zimran, Song; Jokshan, Fowler; Medan, Strife; Midian, Contention; Ishbak, He Leaves; and Shuah, Wealth. In their names are glimpses of fleeting gain, songs, snares, and strife.

Esau, also called Edom, whose name means Red, gave rise to lines of his own. His son Eliphaz means My God is Pure; Reuel, Friend of God; Jeush, Helper; Jaalam, Concealer; and Korah, Bald or Ice. Princes rose from him before Israel had kings, yet they stood apart from the covenant.

When the names are read together, they form a hidden testimony: Man, appointed though frail, clung to his possession, yet the praise of God descended to the dedicated one. When he dies, it shall be sent, but the powerful conqueror will bring rest. The Name will endure, rebellion will rise, but the Father of many will carry the promise, and through him will come laughter, friendship with God, and a kingdom of rest.
