Exceptional times call for exceptional measures. With the usual June spotlight on Basel canceled due to the pandemic, the city’s art scene was left reeling. But 2020 was not going to be a year without art taking center stage in town. Starting today, Kunsttage Basel brings together 44 cultural establishments to showcase art in the city’s every corner.

‘The Possible is Monstrous’ – an ambitious exhibition of art in the public space curated by
Samuel Leuenberger, Kunsthalle Basel’s Elena Filipovic, Kunstmuseum’s Daniel Kurjaković, and Kunsthaus Baselland’s Ines Goldbach – acts as a flagship for the project. Featuring 11 artists, it embraces Basel’s diverse neighborhoods, from the picturesque Münsterplatz to the former freeport in Dreispitz.

As the artworks went up, co-curator Leuenberger took Art Basel on a tour of some of the show’s highlights. These include Latifa Echakhch’s monumental curtains in Dreispitzhalle (Kunsthaus Baselland’s future home), Hannah Weinberger’s participatory sound installation, realized in collaboration with Basel’s Institut Kunst and Berlin’s The Performance Agency, and an intriguing anti-pissing device, courtesy of Basel artist Judith Kakon.

‘The Possible is Monstrous. Works in the Public Sphere’ is part of Kunstagge Basel which takes place from September 17 to 20, 2020 across the city. The project receives financial support from Swisslos-Fonds Basel-Stadt and Swisslos-Fonds Basel-Landschaft and is logistically supported by Art Basel.
