Hi everyone! Finally I had the time to record a full shift! Come along on a 6 hour shift. Being on duty for 6 hours is the minimum length of a shift at the Dutch Railways. The maximum length is 9.5 hours including breaks. We'll drive Sprinter and Intercity's today.

Sprinter Amsterdam – Haarlem - Alkmaar
An easy early morning ride from Amsterdam to Alkmaar via Haarlem. As you can see there are almost no passengers yet at this hour of the day. Most people are still on one ear. Nevertheless we make a start with the train schedule.

Intercity Alkmaar – Haarlem
Time to change trains! Drivers get at least 20 minutes for a transfer between trains. The next train is an Intercity service. The train used for it is a Sprinter model. This because we need the Intercity trains on other routes where longer trains are needed.

Intercity Haarlem - Alkmaar
Time to change the trains direction. In this case we have a bit over 20 minutes to do this. Depending on the train schedule this could be shorter as well. Now I could take it easy.

Sprinter Alkmaar - Hoorn
After arrival in Alkmaar it’s time to change back to the Sprinter service we got off this morning. This train runs between Amsterdam and Hoorn via Haarlem. Now we get to do the rest of the ride to Hoorn as well.

Right after Alkmaar you’ll see a bridge without overhead wires. The trains engines are shut off. The pantograph will reach its highest point and lose contact with the wires because they are raised on approach of the bridge. On the other side the pantograph will smoothly slide under the wire again.

You might remember the unguarded level crossing at Obdam. Recently there had been construction works at this station. Now the level crossing is guarded as well.

Intercity Hoorn - Enkhuizen
After arrival in Hoorn we have a lunch break. After this we continue with the Intercity service coming all the way from the south of our country to Enkhuizen. At departure from Hoorn there’s a delayed train ahead of us so we must take it easy for a few. You can see the delayed train at the shunting tracks at Hoorn Kersenboogerd.

Intercity Enkhuizen - Amsterdam
After arrival in Enkhuizen our train is split in two. You can see the train be taken to the shunting yard as we change direction. We take the train that was running at the front on our way to Enkhuizen with us back to Amsterdam. The other part of the train will stay in Enkhuizen until the afternoon rush hour.

We need to wait for the train from the opposite direction. It has a 5 minute delay. The Train Dispatcher takes us to the other track so the train from the other direction can approach the station on higher speed.

After departure we have contact with the Train Dispatcher and the Train Manager about green signals at the next stops. This gives us a higher approach speed for those stops, shortening our delay.

After this station you’ll see a few bridges without overhead wires. This works the same as the bridge without wires in Alkmaar. See above in this description.
