With only two licensed operators on the island, encounters are calm, respectful, and deeply personal. Each week includes four full days in the water, guided by a local captain, marine biologist, and Freediving Central instructors, who bring years of experience freediving and snorkelling safely alongside these gentle giants.

Why Tonga is the Best Place to Swim with Whales
Every year between August and October, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to Tonga’s warm, clear waters to mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. With crystal-clear 30m+ visibility, minimal boat traffic, and strong local protection laws, Tonga offers some of the most ethical and awe-inspiring whale encounters in the world.

The remote island of ‘Eua is particularly special — its deep drop-offs and sheltered bays attract mother whales and their newborn calves. With small groups and slow, mindful approaches, you’ll experience moments that few others on the planet ever get to share. The best time to swim with mums and calves is September to October, when the young whales are playful, curious, and often interact closely with snorkellers and freedivers.
