R&B Music History
R&B which is the short form of Rhythm and Blues, is one of the famous genres of music which developed in the 70s. Surprisingly, R&B started at a time when music styles with heavy beats like rock, urban etc. were gaining popularity at a very fast rate. Early R&B music makers and singers diverted from big band formula and started to perform in small combinations with emphasis on blues style song structures.
During the 50s to the 70s, a typical R&B music band was generally made of piano, 1-2 guitars, a few saxophones, drums, & bass. Those days, the Rhythm and Blues lyrics usually reflected the Afro-American style of pain and the quest for freedom and joy,

Since its origin, R&B has undergone a lot many shifts in the meaning. In the early 50s, R&B was regularly applied to blues records & towards the late 1950s, the gradual transformation of the music style led to the development of rock and roll. In the 60s, many of the British rock bands were being promoted as R&B bands. The mixture of rock and roll and R&B led to a style which is well known as ‘British rhythm and blues’ today. By 70s, "rhythm and blues" got a new meaning as a blanket term for soul and funk. In 80s, a fresh style of R&B emerged which is well known as ‘contemporary R&B’. Contemporary R&B or Modern day R&B, is a music style that mixes the different elements: - of pop, soul, funk, rhythm and blues, hip hop, and electronic dance music.
