The deadliest night of World War II – March 9-10, 1945. Over 300 B-29 Superfortresses unleashed a massive firestorm on Tokyo, burning 16 square miles of the city to ashes and killing more than 100,000 civilians in a single night. That’s more deaths than Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
Japanese officers once laughed at the huge, “slow” B-29, thinking it would be easy prey. But under General Curtis LeMay’s command, these bombers flew low, stripped of guns, and loaded with napalm and incendiaries – turning the city into an inferno.
From the first high-altitude raids in November 1944 to the devastating firebombing campaign that destroyed dozens of Japanese cities, this video tells the full story section by section.
