The telco cloud’s must-have: ‘Open, managed, software defined infrastructure’

There’s a lot of discussion about 5G, which is fine, I think it’s happening, eventually, really,” says Ignacio wryly, “but in the meantime there is a lot of work to do.” And that work, of course, must also involve the development and harnessing of NFV and SDN without which 5G - in its most elaborate and ambitious guise - is a non-starter.
So what about NFV? Martyn asks. “NFV didn’t happen as expected but it’s happening still, just taking a little bit longer. The concept was driven by the operators,” says Ignacio, “so that meant there was less enthusiasm on the part of the vendors.”
He outlines HPE’s five year strategy to meet demands of 5G - define the needs for each segment of the network and then make sure each segment is open: “We mean open in a very specific way,” says Ignacio. “We mean ‘open, managed, software defined infrastructure’. That’s the basis for a telco cloud that ecompasses the whole network from the edge to the core.”
