Описание к видео Talk 302: PiratesOfTheMalabar – Kerala’s History Of Resistance by Dr Ruby Maloni

PiratesOfTheMalabar | Kerala’s History Of Resistance by Dr Ruby Maloni | Khaki Lab

The spice trade linked Kerala’s Malabar coast to the wider Indian Ocean. The arrival of the colonial powers – Portuguese, English, French and Dutch – led to intrusions in the profitable trade, and the seafarers of Malabar responded strongly. In the 16th century, Portuguese ships were attacked and the cartaz (licence) enforced by them was avoided. The 17th and 18th centuries were marked by the complexities of competition with the English, French and Dutch. The Dutch, especially, were set back severely by Marthanda Varma of Travancore at the Battle of Colachel. This militant reaction gave Malabari seafarers the nomenclature of ‘pirates.’ At our Online Talk #PiratesOfTheMalabar, historian Ruby Maloni explains how an ethos of resistance became part of the history of Kerala.
