This animation doesn't contain any text, but visually summarizes micro and nanofabrication of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), typically used as classical, non-volatile magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) cells. The device layout shown is an example of single test device used in electrical and magnetic testing of MTJs within spintronics research labs around the world.

As shown, the cylindrical pillar in the center of the device is where memory data is stored as a bit or binary digit. The conventional structure of an MTJ pillar consists of a ferromagnet/insulator/ferromagnet sandwiched between a bottom and top electrode. Although realistically, the device will contain additional metallic layers to promote desired adhesion and eliminate stray magnetic fields and oxidation when exposed to atmospheric conditions.

Note that this fabrication process is also application to superconducting MTJs and other variations of MTJs.
