***Haiwei Li is a 1st year Historian at Trinity College. Born and raised in Kuwait with Chinese parents, he speaks Arabic, Chinese and English fluently. In Kuwait, he rose to fame after a video of him singing a Kuwaiti national song went viral, and he also performed the piano, violin and dance all around the country, including for his Highness the late Emir. He received his Grade 8 in Piano and Violin aged 7 and 8 respectively, and in 2017, he was crowned Young Musician of the Gulf in the most prestigious music competition in the region for his piano, whilst also receiving the Best Strings Player award for his performance on the violin. He then received a full scholarship to read at one of the most prestigious music schools in the world - Chetham’s School of Music - studying under the tutelage of world-renowned soloists Bingbing Li and Jiafeng Chen. Having won several prizes there, including 1st place in the Overall Category in the Alderly Edge Music Competition, Haiwei decided that concert pianist was no longer a career he wanted to pursue, and thus transferred to Harrow School as a Music Scholar with a 95% scholarship. There, he excelled academically and musically, even picking up the organ and winning the schools’ annual organ competition. Haiwei is also an avid dancer, having started ballet at the age of 4, and later pursuing Latin dancing and Hip-Hop. He received a Grade 8 Distinction in Ballet in 2017 with a record score of 97/100.

***CN: Haiwei Li is a candidate for Debates Officer of The Cambridge Union; this discussion features emotional reflections concerning death, religion, among other potentially sensitive topics.

This is part 1 of 3 for this special election series of back-to-back-to-back interviews!

WHY? COFFEE'S ON ME, DAVID QUAN 权丁文

TL;DR: To process my emotions after a grueling campaign for President of The Cambridge Union, I reflected upon the influences of my late Grandfather and wrote him a letter: https://linktr.ee/DavidQuan. Drawing inspiration from him, I hope to learn more from others through genuine discussions – giving listeners heartfelt conversations filled with authentic insights, and giving guests legacy-worthy interviews to treasure.

To converse with someone without a strict time limit or structure – meticulously engaging in a curious process of clarifications or elaborations – is not only a rare privilege. This longer format also allows the sharing of otherwise unshared or unappreciated anecdotes. There are appeals to sound-bite media, of course, but the metrics that matter most to me are more about the uniqueness of contribution than measures of virality. Over time, I hope to be able to better deconstruct guests' fascinating experiences – to seamlessly tease out the insights for listeners to enjoy and learn from while cooking, commuting, relaxing, or walking their pet.

But this personal project is fundamentally as much about what we can learn from the guests as it is to give them (current) legacy-worthy interviews. My top priority is for guests to enjoy a unique opportunity to challenge, learn about, and be themselves; hopefully, they will be able to keep recordings of in-depth, heartfelt conversations to reflect on in years’ time. And the best part for guests? Coffee’s on Me, David Quan 权丁文
