This week we're going back in time to the 1990s with Infiniti's first SUV. Our retro review is on this 1997 Infiniti QX4 4x4 Luxury SUV.

A viewer of mine reached out a while ago to ask if I'd be interested in filming his 1997 Infiniti QX4. This week we met up in order to make that happen. 25 years ago Infiniti launched their first-ever luxury SUV based on the second generation Nissan Pathfinder. Back in the 90s luxury manufacturers were starting to roll out SUVs, Land Rover was the only SUV-exclusive brand, but marques like Acura, Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz were busy rolling out their own versions of luxury SUVs. Infiniti's QX4 was similar to the Acura SLX in the sense that it was a mid-size SUV with off-road capabilities but an upscale interior over it's consumer counterpart.

In this episode of TestDrive Spotlight goes over this first year of production on the 1997 Infiniti QX4 SUV along with the features, specifications, and technical information about this vehicle. We go over the styling differences over the Pathfinder along with the features that made this superior to the Pathfinder. We then take the 1997 Infiniti QX4 on a road test to see how this 25 year old luxury SUV has held up over the decades, and if it's still as good as outlets like MotorWeek said it was back when it was new.

We then go over a buyer's guide on this SUV to discuss common problems with the Infiniti QX4 and R50 Nissan Pathfinder, along with the comprehensive rust problems this vehicle suffers from, along with engine oil burning/leaking reported by many owners. We wrap up with our overall impressions of this vehicle and our final thoughts on buying and owning an Infiniti QX4 in 2022+.
