It is common for landlords to have conditions for potential tenants, which may include things like “no pets,” “no smoking,” or “females only.” However, one landlord in Kaohsiung took things even further, indicating in a rental ad that only male renters who have had a vasectomy are welcome. Commenting on the unusual requirement, the landlord said the ad was posted tongue-in-cheek, as a commentary on discriminatory requirements for renters.

There are some landlords who have these restrictions. They feel they must rent only to female tenants, because they’re worried that letting men into the apartment would result in unwanted pregnancies. Well, I wanted to teach them a trick. Just write it directly into the ad that male renters must have a vasectomy to be eligible to rent the apartment. I made a sample ad to show them.

I think there may be elements of discrimination. In particular, the issue of whether a man can reproduce or not has an impact on him. As for whether such an ad is illegal, we often see ads that restrict renting to women or men, and these gender-specific restrictions are not illegal under current laws.

The lawyer explained that although such requirements do have discriminatory connotations, they are not illegal, since they involve a contract formed out of consensus from both parties. Although not illegal, such rental restrictions have become a subject of growing debate.
