In May 2014, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, three 12-year-old girls — Anissa Weier, Morgan Geyser, and their classmate Payton Leutner — went for a walk in a wooded park following a sleepover. During that walk, Weier and Geyser lured Leutner into the woods, where she was stabbed 19 times in an attempt to appease the fictional internet character Slender Man. Leutner survived after crawling to a nearby trail and being discovered by a passerby.

Anissa Weier was charged as an accomplice with attempted second-degree intentional homicide. Unlike Geyser, who carried out the stabbing, prosecutors characterized Weier’s role as facilitative — participating in planning, luring the victim, and remaining present during the attack. Weier pleaded guilty but was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

She was committed to a secure mental health facility for up to 25 years. In 2021, after several years of treatment and evaluations, Weier was granted conditional release, making her the first of the two defendants to be released under court supervision.
