A century ago, India witnessed the rise of a movement that spoke not just of freedom from British rule, but also of equality, workers’ rights, and social justice.

Formed in 1925 at the Kanpur Conference, the Communist Party of India (CPI) drew inspiration from Karl Marx’s ideology and the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Indian communism grew through three major streams:
• M.N. Roy and Comintern influence
• Left groups in Bombay and Calcutta
• Workers’ and peasants’ movements like AITUC

CPI opposed colonial exploitation, caste discrimination, untouchability, and communal politics, and played a role in the freedom struggle, Meerut Conspiracy Case, peasant movements, and constitutional debates.
