Описание к видео Bread "Could I" 1969 James Griffin Robb Royer David Gates Jim Gordon

Bread is one of those groups that got pigeon-holed as a syrupy-sweet love song band, trapped in a niche Elektra exec Jack Holzman felt they were best-suited in for success. Jack preferred the melodic songs David Gates wrote for their single A-sides, leaving James Griffin to settle on the B-sides. It was no doubt, David's songs that propelled them up the charts and earned them Gold-status sales album after album. Their debut self-titled album Bread had "It Don't Matter To Me" on it, which was re-recorded for a single to follow their Number One hit "Make It With You," a song on their second album On The Waters, and it made the Top Ten, pleasing Holzman. Both were songs Gates wrote.
From the debut album here is "Could I," a James Griffin-Robb Royer composition. It was put on their second single (after "Dismal Day"), which, like David's "Dismal Day," failed to chart. Griffin is the singer, Jim Gordon was the drummer, and that awesome bass track was played by David Gates.
Recalling the song, James said, "Robb (Royer) came up with the musical idea for that one on piano. I wrote the second part, that George Harrison-ish middle-C section. We thought it had a real English flavor to it. Jim Gordon played drums on it - it was a real hard song for a drummer to pull off, because it had a 3/4 against a 4/4 rhythm. Jim was one of the few who could've done it."
