Butterfly Flutterfly Left Only Key Items

Your swimmers are progressing! Excellent!! We will be focusing on performing a single arm of butterfly focusing on the timing the catch, breath, and recovery. Let's get to it.

This drill is very simple, which we like. There is also a lot happening at once and our goal is to keep things working together. Remember, we need patience, especially for younger swimmers. Let's go over what we look for. In this drill, we have progreesed and are ready for no equipment.

Only the left arm will be moving with this drill. Breathe as the arms pass the shoulders. The head should be nice and low to the surface. The right arm will stay in front of the shoulder in a relaxed position, resting along the surface. Arms exit at the hip. Recover the arms low to the water with the palms facing behind you. As the hands pass the body (making a "T"), the palms will face downward. The hands will land in front of or just outside the shoulders. The head should be in the water before the arms; this is very important. As the arms land in the water, remember to extend them. As the arms extend, be sure to keep the arms in between the arms just below the surface. The chest should be the deepest point, but not as deep as you might think. Once the arm lands forward, get those finger tips down and establish the catch. We would look for the hand to pull the water back, establishing a great power triangle. The path the hand will take as it continues to push water back to the hip can vary depending on the level of the athlete. With developmental swimmers, we like to see the hand just push back to the hip area and upper level age group swimmers and senior swimmers will see the hand come inwards under or towards the belly button and then push out.

For the breath, we like to see our swimmers lift the head as the arms are passing the shoulders. The breath should be taken when the swimmers are low to the water. We also like to see our athletes get their head down quickly. The swimmer will have an entry point in front of their of their shoulders or just outside of the shoulder area. This drill will be using a flutter kick; a moderate kick is all that is needed.

-While We Do Not Want The Knees To Excessively Bend, Do Allow Them To Bend
Head/chest and feet move in opposite directions from the hips.
Engage the core.
Focus on moving forward.
Use Left Arm Only
