Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world
A powerful wave of severe weather caused significant damage in Greece, particularly on the islands of Crete and Chios, as well as in the Epirus region.
In Crete, the most severe damage was reported in the municipality of Festos. In the Mesara area, a bridge on the road to the Timbaki farmland was destroyed, blocking traffic. Landslides occurred on the Kamares-Vorizia road, where a large boulder fell onto the roadway. Landslides also occurred on the coastal Myrtos-Tertsa highway, which is closed indefinitely after a rockfall. Due to strong winds, fallen trees were reported across the island.
In Chios, heavy rains led to widespread flooding. Firefighters conducted numerous pumping operations from houses, basements, and warehouses. The areas most severely damaged were Mega Limniona, Thymiana, Agia Ermioni, Kambos, Kardamada, and the section of the road from Vrontados to Lagada. The Olympus River's water level has approached critical levels.
Heavy rains, storm winds, and landslides have led to flooding, power and water supply outages, and road closures.
The districts of Preveza and Ilia are in dire straits, with numerous landslides reported, while coastal areas in Corfu are flooded.
In the north of the country, severe damage was reported in Alexandroupoli, where squalls and heavy rains have closed the coastal section of the Makri-Mesimvria road.
On the island of Samothrace, fallen trees have left some residents without power, and coastal roads are suspended.
In the Epirus region, landslides have destroyed roads and buildings: some villages are virtually cut off, homes and farms are damaged, and cars are buried under rocks. Furthermore, in the resort area of Katerini, the storm pushed seawater onto land, flooding streets, shops, and the embankment, hampering traffic.
