If you’re a gigging drummer, you’ve had to play in a small room before. And if you aspire to be a gigging drummer, you’re not going to want to miss these crucial tips I’ll give you today. I’m condensing my 9 years of experience playing professionally into 3 strategies and a whole bunch of tips for playing well and sounding awesome…even in a tiny room. From gear adjustments and drum tuning to subtle hand and finger techniques and influential psychological shifts, we’re covering everything. Here are “3 strategies for sounding amazing in any small venue.”

I’ve played in so many different rooms over the years, and every room is different. Unless I’m playing outside or in an auditorium seating more than a hundred people, I have to make a conscious decision to play more lightly than usual. I play a lot of gigs in small rooms at restaurants or wineries, and anytime folks are eating dinner or having conversations while I’m playing - I know I have to keep things chill. Today I’m sharing with you every tip and strategy I know for still sounding really good on the drums…when you have to play quietly. You CAN play rock grooves quietly, and you CAN play rock songs quietly. You may have to get creative, but when you have the right technique and right mindset going into it… you can take huge satisfaction and fulfillment in conquering the challenge of sounding awesome in a small room.

If you’re a fellow gigging drummer, I hope you can glean a new tip from this video. If you’re new to the drums and aspire to play gigs soon, I hope this has served to be an invaluable resource to you. Get your “quiet drumming chops” up to speed today so you’ll be ready.
