It's long, but it's so good.

Stories are so powerful. I like to think of this as a backdoor or side door parenting strategy, because instead of going directly after our children, we can bring them into a world that isn't directly associated with them to teach a lesson.

It can be so easy to get after our children when they do something like this. But we've all been there. Our children almost always panic and double down.

It can be incredibly frustrating, and it makes sense that we want to push them to tell the truth, but there are other ways to address them in these moments.

And it's okay for us to sometimes (maybe not every time) allow them to sit with the bad decision.

If we have taught our children well, they will eventually drop their defenses and allow the shame around the decision to inform a next, better choice.

And sometimes it's better to let our kids come to these choices on their own, as opposed to always forcing them.

That's where they start to develop the understanding and the skills intrinsically.

And, ultimately, that's the whole point.
