GYROCOPTER
LANÇA RAJADAS DE ROCKETS E MÍSSEIS TELEGUIADOS
Após uma vida inteira de serviço em guerras, motins e tumultos, os superiores de Aurel decidiram que ele já tinha passado por coisas suficientes. Mas para além de algumas bugigangas e uma pensão considerável, o velho engenheiro deixou o serviço com algo muito mais interessante: uns esquemas esquecidos e incompletos para construir um Gyrocopter, o primeiro veículo voador tripulado e não-mágico do mundo. Ao aposentar-se nas obscuridades tropicais do Arquipélago das Cinzas, com nada mais do que tempo e dinheiro, ele começou a desenvolver o tal aparelho.

À medida que os anos avançavam e os restos de protótipos falhados começavam a empilhar-se, ele começava a perguntar-se se voar numa máquina era sequer possível. Uma década e um dia depois de se aposentar, numa tarde solarenta com uma brisa vinda do sul, Aurel trabalhava na sua mais recente tentativa, resmungando de indignação e esperando mais um fracasso. Com um grunhido de esforço ele puxou a corda de arranque e cobriu a sua cabeça, à espera da inevitável explosão. Contudo, para sua grande surpresa, ele começou a elevar-se e, depois de uns ajustes nervosos, estabilizou-se. Em menos de uma hora, ele já estava a esgueirar-se com a brisa, ao mesmo nível das gaivotas, e Aurel encontrava-se assoberbado pela maravilha de tirar a respiração que é voar.

Com a chegada do anoitecer, ele preparou-se para voltar para a sua oficina, mas mal ele virou o seu veículo, foi atingido por uma bola de canhão que lhe partiu o leme. Saindo do meio dos destroços, ele nadou em direção do pedaço de terra mais próximo à vista e praguejou mil maldições enquanto via o navio responsável pela bola de canhão a recolher o que restava da sua máquina. Dias depois, quando Aurel voltou à sua oficina, ele começou a trabalhar noutro Gyrocopter, jurando que este novo seria capaz de transportar um certo tipo de carga muito mais pesada e perigosa.

BARRAGES WITH HIS CANNON AND HOMING MISSILES
After serving through a lifetime of wars, upheaval, riots, and revolutions, the brass figured Aurel had seen enough. But in addition to a few trinkets and his considerable pension, the erstwhile engineer left with something far more interesting: a long-forgotten, incomplete schematic for a Gyrocopter, the world's first manned, non-magical flying device. Retiring to the tropical obscurity of the Ash Archipelago with little else but time and money, he set to work building the device.

As the years wore on and the remains of failed prototypes began to pile up, he began to wonder if mechanical flight was even possible. A decade and a day after his retirement, on a sunny afternoon with a southerly breeze, Aurel sat in his latest attempt bristling with indignation and expectant failure. With a grunt of effort he pulled the ignition cord and covered his head, waiting for the inevitable explosion. However to his great surprise he began to lift and, following a few panicked adjustments, stabilize. Within an hour, he was ducking and weaving with the breeze, level with the gulls, and Aurel found himself filled with the breathless wonder of flight.

As dusk settled in he set a course back to his workshop, but no sooner had he turned his craft when a cannonball tore through his tailfin. Disentangling himself from the wreckage, he swam toward the nearest piece of land in sight, and cursed to see the ship responsible for the cannonball collecting the debris. Days later, when Aurel returned to his workshop, he set to work on yet another gyrocopter, this one capable of carrying a much heavier, more dangerous payload.
