Person and Family Engagement (PFE) is the process of engaging the person who is receiving medical services, and their family, throughout the medical care experience.

Implementing patient and family engagement strategies has led to fewer hospital-acquired infections, reduced medical errors, reduced serious safety events, and increased patient satisfaction scores.

The Hospital Executive Leadership: Person and Family Engagement Panel discussED best practices from around the world and announce the new Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS) developed by the PSMF’s dedicated workgroup of multi-disciplinary experts on this topic.

Martin Hatlie, Executive Co-Director, MedStar Institute for Quality & Safety – Mr. Hatlie currently serves on the Boards of Directors of the Leapfrog Group and the Alliance for Integrated Medication Management. He has a strong leadership role for H2PI – the Healthcare Patient Partnership Institute and is on the patient safety advisory board for the World Health Organization.

Caroline Stade, RN, MBA, Chief Nursing Officer, University of Children’s Hospital Basel, Switzerland – With close to 30 years of experience as an RN, Ms. Stade is a certified expert nurse in Anesthesia and Resuscitation. She serves as the Chief Nursing Officer at University of Children’s Hospital in Basel Switzerland.

Vonda Vaden Bates, CEO, 10th Dot – Ms. Bates became a patient advocate after her husband, Yogiraj Charles Bates, died from one of the most common preventable causes of hospital associated death, HA-VTE (Hospital Associated-Venous Thromboembolism.) Stalled attempts to engage the hospital redirected Vonda’s attention to patient and caregiver safety everywhere.

Dr. Neelam Dhingra-Kumar, Coordinator, Patient Safety & Risk Management, World Health Organization, Geneva – Dr. Dhingra leads WHO’s efforts on patient safety and risk management within the context of improving people-centered integrated health services delivery and universal healthcare coverage (UHC).

Michael Seres, CEO 11Health and Technologies LTD – Mr. Seres is the founder of 11Health, the world’s first sensor network company focused on helping patients with long term chronic conditions who are connected to medical bags. He was diagnosed at age 12 with the incurable bowel condition Crohn’s Disease. He is a life-long patient having undergone numerous operations. He was the co-Chair of NHS Digital Services User Council and helped implement the first Skype clinics in UK.
