European inflation rose at a faster rate than expected during December, beyond the limits set by the European central bank.

Officials from the European Union's office of statistics said that Euro-area consumer prices increased from 1.9% in November to 2.2% in December, year-over-year.

The boost is 2% higher than the median economist forecast and marks the highest rate since October 2008.

Crude oil prices also jumped 8.6% last month.

Amsterdam-based ING Groep economist Martin van Vliet told Bloomberg, "The recent run-up in commodity prices suggests that December's leap in inflation was mainly driven by higher food and energy prices. The CPI reading will probably raise some eyebrows at the ECB, but it should not be cause for alarm...inflation should drop back below 2 percent before mid-year."
