▶ In the single-player mission "Live from the Crime Scene," Max Payne arrives at an abandoned subway station during a cold New York night — the aftermath of a heist gone wrong. The air is thick with smoke, sirens wailing in the distance, and the NYPD already crawling over what’s left of the crime scene.

Following the trail, Max makes his way through the derelict tunnels beneath Roscoe Street Station, uncovering the mobsters’ plan and the chaos left in their wake. He overhears thugs talking about Jack Lupino’s madness, revealing their connection to the Punchinello crime family. The clues point toward something far bigger than a simple bank robbery.

As Max digs deeper, an explosion rocks the station — the mobsters have blasted through to the Roscoe Bank vault. Inside, he discovers they’re after Aesir Corporation bonds, hinting at a powerful corporate connection behind the heist. Fighting through waves of armed thugs, Max clears the station and secures the detonator for a door rigged with explosives, covering the gang’s escape.

When Max finally meets his old partner Alex Balder, the two piece together Lupino’s involvement. But before Alex can reveal what he’s uncovered, tragedy strikes — he’s murdered by an unseen assassin right before Max’s eyes. The shock and grief cut deep; Alex was Max’s only remaining link to sanity after losing his family.

With vengeance and confusion boiling inside him, Max fights his way out of the crumbling station, knowing one thing for sure: Alex died for knowing too much about Lupino and the Punchinellos.

▶ About This Game - Max Payne is a critically acclaimed neo-noir third person shooter video game franchise, originally developed by Remedy Entertainment (Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne) and later by Rockstar Studios (Max Payne 3). The series follows Max Payne, a New York City police detective turned vigilante after the brutal murder of his family by drug addicts. Known for its dark storytelling, cinematic action, and ground breaking “bullet time” mechanic, the franchise has become a cult classic in gaming history.

The first game, Max Payne, launched for Windows in 2001, followed by releases for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Mac in 2002. A unique Game Boy Advance version arrived in 2003. In November 2021, Microsoft added the entire Max Payne trilogy to its Xbox backward compatibility program, making them playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

As of 2011, the Max Payne franchise has sold over 7.5 million units worldwide. The series remains notable for its noir-inspired storytelling, slow-motion gunfights, and lasting influence on the shooter genre.

In April 2022, Remedy Entertainment announced that remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2 are in development in collaboration with Rockstar Games. These remakes will be released as a single title, revitalizing the series for a new generation of players.
