Natural thyroid medication vs synthetic thyroid medication: which should you use? You might automatically assume natural but that’s not always the case! And, as you listen to this video, you will learn that the term natural isn't quite as straightforward as it might sound.

Most thyroid patients assume that synthetic thyroid medications are bad and that natural thyroid medications are good, just based on the name. But when you evaluate thyroid medications there are two things you need to keep in mind:

#1. Is whether or not the medication is biodientical.
And #2. Is the source.

All prescription thyroid medications are bioidentical, so that is never an issue. Bioidentical means that the hormone you are taking is an exact replica of what your body produces naturally and this is what you want. Believe it or not, this isn't the case with most hormones that doctors prescribe including birth control. But this isn't something you have to worry about with thyroid medications.

The second is the source. Synthetic, in this setting, refers to the fact that thyroid medications can be manufactured by different building blocks in a laboratory. The term natural is used to state that the medication came from nature, instead of a lab. In the case of some thyroid medications (like NDT), thyroid hormones come from the thyroid gland of pigs. They are natural in the sense that they came from an animal source but not natural in the sense that they came from a human. And this is important because coming from an animal source doesn't make it automatically good for you.

We know from experiments in the 2000s that estrogen from horses caused a lot of problems in women who took them for hormone replacement therapy.

Whenever you take a thyroid medication you always need to think about what is best for your body! You may find that synthetic works for you or that natural, but don't automatically assume one is bad and the other is good.
