Illustrator White Lines in Patterns, CPU vs. GPU and Paste as Layers to Photoshop

Still frustrated by white tiling lines in your repeat pattern fills in Illustrator? I have solutions and helpful background information for you. In this webinar, I explain that it's caused by an anti-aliasing bug in Illustrator, with a demonstration of what anti-aliasing is. I also discuss CPU view vs. GPU view and why this makes the lines look less obvious when displaying the pattern fill in Illustrator, but unfortunately, the white lines still appear when you export from Illustrator.

The solution to the white lines when exporting pattern fills from Illustrator is to enable Art Optimized anti-aliasing in whichever export method you use.

However, if you are copying and pasting art with pattern fills from Illustrator to Photoshop, you don't have the option to choose Art Optimized anti-aliasing. Instead, you can eliminate the lines by choosing 'Paste as Layers'. This rasterizes the pattern fill without the white lines.

I also demonstrate the lines appearing in Photoshop inside Vector Smart Objects and when you paste your pattern fills as pixels. Fortunately, Adobe introduced the Paste as Layers option in Photoshop 2022, and now we have a solution to the pattern fill lines problem in Photoshop.
