Endometriosis and UTI: Endometriosis Symptoms - Dr. Shaheen Khazali (Part 1)

Описание к видео Endometriosis and UTI: Endometriosis Symptoms - Dr. Shaheen Khazali (Part 1)

In this video Dr. Khazali, a gynecological surgeon based in London, discusses the following:

● Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the endometrium grows outside the uterus. This tissue, while very similar to that located within the uterus, differs slightly in structure and receptors.
● Endometrioma are cysts, often filled with old, darkly coloured blood, that are found in the ovaries and sometimes elsewhere. They’re sometimes known as chocolate cysts due to their color.
● Much about Endometriosis remains a mystery and, to further complicate matters, the overarching term “Endometriosis” could be encapsulating unrelated diseases.
● As it stands, the current outdated definition of Endometriosis is one coined by Dr. Sampson 100 years ago which points to menstrual blood coming out through the fallopian tube, implanting and growing Endometriosis.
● Many feel that this theory is too simplistic as it doesn’t account for genetic or immunological or microbiome theories.
● While most Endometriosis occurs in the ovaries, pelvis, uterosacral ligaments, bowel and appendix, technically, it can occur almost anywhere in the body although it is extremely rare.
● Where Endometriosis occurs in hollow organs like the bladder or bowel, the growth happens from the outside, in.
● Adenomyosis occurs when Endometriosis grows inside the muscle of the uterus. Fibroids, however, are not directly associated with Endometriosis but both are estrogen dependent which is why they can frequently occur in the same person. Endometritis, on the other hand, is unrelated and simply refers to inflammation in the uterine lining.
● While the three most common symptoms of Endometriosis are painful periods, painful sex and painful defecation, there are many others including bloating, urinary symptoms, exhaustion, abnormal bleeding and difficulty in conceiving.
● Bowel symptoms may be incorrectly diagnosed as IBS.
● Endometriosis symptoms are not exclusively experienced during menstruation, though they can often be cyclical.
● When experiencing pain due to Endometriosis, individuals should assess how the pain level is affecting their quality of life. Whether it is preventing them from engaging in normal activities of work, study and leisure.
● An Endometriosis diagnosis does not automatically equate to infertility.
● Little is known about the relationship between hormones and Endometriosis.
● Bladder Endometriosis symptoms can include: blood in the urine, frequency, painful urination and pain during or after sex. All these can be mistakenly diagnosed as UTI.
● A complex relationship between the immune system, inflammation and Endometriosis is suspected
