Jordan - 6 July 1970 and File
After a week of bitter fighting in Amman in July 1970, King Hussein of Jordan is confronted with the greatest challenge yet to his authority from the Palestine guerrilla movement. On two occasions this year, Jordanian Army troops and the guerrillas have clashed in bloody skirmishes in Amman. Over 1,000 people have been killed or injured. To maintain the peace, the King has been forced to grant an increasing number of concessions to the guerrillas, some of whom would like to see him deposed. Now, a four-nation Arab committee has been set up to work out a permanent relationship between the guerrillas and the King. The growing power of the guerrillas, under
their leader Yasser Arafat, could be the spur that prompts Iraq and Syria to set up a viable Eastern Command which will pose a real threat to Israel.
