Side Roads On The Left & Right: Driving Lesson

Описание к видео Side Roads On The Left & Right: Driving Lesson

Here is our fourth instalment of our beginner driving lesson tutorials! This video is about side roads and we teach you how to use the MSPSL routine whilst in a side road situation.

Here are some time stamps that can help you navigate through each section.

MSPSL - Mirors: 2:59

Your mspsl routine still applies when turning left and right when turning into side roads. Onto the approach, you should look in all mirrors to observe all around you.You should especially look in your rearview mirror and the left/right mirror. Look in your left mirror when turning left and look in your right mirror when turning right!

MPSPL - Signals: 4:38

Using your signal is a great way to indicate your intention to other road users. You should apply your signal in enough time before turning left or right. Signalling your intention too early (especially if you go past a side road) can confuse other road users around you. This a cause of some road crashes.

MSPSL - Position: 5:53

Positioning the car when entering side roads is important as this is another way of telling other road users your intentions. On the approach to a left turn, you should position 1 metre away from the curb and when turning right you should stop the car before the centre white line on the side road!

MSPSL - Speed: 6:38

Lowering your speed before turning into a sideroad gives you plenty of thinking time before entering the side road. If there is an obstacle in the new road, you will have more time to react and stop (if you need to) in case there is a hazard.

MSPSL - Look: 9:02

You must constantly look at all times for any vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, elderly people and children. Side roads can also have parked cars that can block your view. Always look for other road users and observe the road ahead.

Side Road Left - Point Of Turn: 9:20

You should aim to steer when your bonnet gets inline with the edge of the new road. How much you will need to steer will be dependent on the width and angle of the road you are on!

Side Road Right - Judgement Of Turning: 10:17

When turning right into a side road, (from major to minor) you must allow oncoming traffic through as they have priority. You will need to anticipate the road ahead and judge whether you should turn or not. Remember to not "shoot the junction" as this means you will need more time to turn into the side road!

Side Road Right - Point Of Turn: 12:12

When turning right, you should position your bonnet before the white centre line in the side road.

Beyond The Basics - The Next Steps: 13:14

Now, we go more in depth with advanced turns! These include the following:
Traffic light controlled junctions
Dual carriageways - left and right
Road position on dual carriageways - changing lanes.
Narrow streets and lanes
One way streets
Road markings - box junctions, pedestrian crossings, keep clears!
Higher speeds - approach speeds at 30 mph, 40 mph, 50 mph, 60
mph, and 70 mph

The Driving Exam: 15:42

The examiner will be looking at your MSPSL routine when turning into side roads, how you control the car and how you respond to any obstructions/hazards when approaching into the new road!

Here are some common errors learner drivers make when turning into side roads:

Not checking your mirrors
Not applying a signal in good time
Bad road position/cutting corners when turning right, or clipping the
curb when turning left.
Not giving way to oncoming traffic
Waving pedestrians to cross the road
Not responding in good time to other road users
Not making progress on the new road!
