Greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world really. What 40 years on still here, still selling out stadiums, people still would today they are probably one of they're the most influential rock bands of all time. Seeing these old grandads on stage but still with the greatest rock riffs - if you want pop idols, Jesus, these guys are it, aren't they. They're still here after all these years . Fantastic."

STONES GET INTIMATE WITH FANS

Rock veterans The Rolling Stones tonight played the smallest show of their world tour - just yards from where they made their debut more than 40 years
ago.

A pouting Mick Jagger and the group performed to a crowd of just 2,000, as they turned on the magic at The Astoria in London.

Last week the Stones had to cancel a number of shows after Jagger, 60, was ordered to rest his voice.

But as he bounded on stage, he was back to full strength as he told the audience: "We're very pleased to be here I can tell you."

The band are more used to wowing the crowds at stadiums and arenas, but have also added a handful of more intimate club shows to their stints in cities around the world on the current Licks world tour.

The show at The Astoria - tickets for which are believed to have been changing hands for four-figure sums - is just a stone's throw away from where the quintet played their first show.

Their debut gig was at the original Marquee club in London's Oxford Street in 1962, although at that stage the band had an apostrophe rather than a G in their name.

The classic line-up was still missing Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts.

The 11-date British leg is the last segment of the Stones' 40 Licks world tour.
