BYD, the leading automaker in China and the second-largest in the world, has now revealed its luxury off-road SUV called the Fangchengbao 5, also known as the Leopard 5. This vehicle comes with impressive off-road driving capabilities and competes with other powerful off-road cars such as the Toyota Land Cruiser. In a tug-of-war demonstration, the Toyota Land Cruiser initially pulled the Fangchengbao 5, but the BYD vehicle ultimately withstood the challenge and dragged the Toyota to its side, winning the battle.

The BYD Fangchengbao 5 also features an innovative drone system mounted above the vehicle. A drone can be deployed to survey the terrain, helping the driver assess whether the road ahead is suitable to proceed. The drone feed can be viewed directly through the touchscreen infotainment system within the vehicle.

In terms of maneuverability, the Leopard 5 can perform a tank turn, similar to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, making it highly useful in tight parking spaces. It also rivals other off-road powerhouses such as the Toyota Prado, Ford Everest, Land Rover Defender, and several other Chinese SUVs.

Engineers at BYD have enhanced the Leopard 5’s off-road abilities by enabling it to wade through water up to the height of the vehicle’s bonnet—something many vehicles are incapable of doing. The Leopard 5 is an off-road-focused SUV with body-on-frame construction, built on BYD Auto’s DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) Super Hybrid system. It boasts an approach angle of 35 degrees and a departure angle of 32 degrees.

The vehicle’s extreme off-roading prowess stems from its powertrain configuration. It is neither a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle nor a fully electric one, but a plug-in hybrid operating as an extended-range electric vehicle. The internal combustion engine charges the battery rather than directly powering the wheels. The battery then powers the electric motors, resulting in cleaner emissions compared to traditional combustion vehicles. To protect its hybrid components, the batteries are well insulated to prevent water damage during deep water driving.
