The Mengelberg "Eroica" from 1930 is one of the most important recordings he left us. Not only is it from the last set of recordings he made for RCA, it is also one of the most authoritative performances of this symphony on record from any period. It is the only recording which contains all of the repeats in the score made before 1955.

This is truly one of the great "Eroica's" on record.

Mengelberg held the directorship with the Philharmonic for twelve years before making any recordings with it. This period included the merger with the New York Symphony. In the late 1920s, he had to share the directorship with Toscanini, which ultimately lead to him leaving the orchestra shortly after this recording was made, stating he did not like the "influence" Toscanini was having on the orchestra. He left for Europe and never returned to the USA.

Due to depression era budgeting RCA booked the recording into the more economical Liederkranz Hall, which was known for its very good acoustics.

Those who are not familiar with the technology of the period may be surprised that 78 rpm direct-to-disk sounded this good nearly a century ago. There are many recordings from this period which sound quite impressive.

Some surface noise is present after nearly a century.
