Once again I found myself volunteering on one of the nine Northern Forest Canoe Trail's "Waterway Work Weekends" scheduled for the 2024 season. I tend to volunteer on the New York sections as it is closer to my home.

Our goal for this project was to work on the section of portage trail leading from the Saranac River around the lower locks to Oseetah lake. We removed roots, put down heavy road fabric, spread several tons of crushed stone and a healthy top layer of dirt to improve footing and drainage on this steep section of the carry. I think the 90 Miler peeps will approve!

I've been an NFCT member since 2011 and proud of it. I truly love the organization, it's mission and values for the communities the 740 mile water trail passes through, they are a good neighbor.

I enjoy doing this work as my schedule allows, hope to be on another trip in 2025. I encourage you to stop over to the NFCT's website and have a look and see if you'd like to get involved.

"The Northern Forest Canoe Trail relies on the support of volunteers in order to accomplish many of its goals. Volunteers provide support for events, lead paddling trips, and provide help by participating in waterway work trips and by adopting sections of the trail. If you’re interested in joining our efforts, please send an email to [email protected]."
