The protests against Agnipath have now spread to West Bengal too. Protests began in New Jalpaiguri on Friday after Army aspirants started protesting in the Howrah bridge on Friday morning. The police dispersed the mob immediately and several were detained. This led to chaos in the area leading to temporary disruption of traffic.

Protests against central government’s Agnipath took its worst turn on Thursday, June 16, as Army aspirants disrupted rail and road traffic in several parts of Bihar. The protests fell into its second day. The angry youths demanded the withdrawal of the new short-term recruitment scheme. The protests have already spread to several states across the country.
The Indian government on June 15 announced the Agnipath recruitment scheme for the Indian armed forces. This scheme is expected to bring about a change in the recruitment for the three wings – Army, Air Force and Navy. This scheme will allow individuals to be called as ‘Agniveers.’ Under this scheme, the average age profile of Indian Armed Forces would come down by 4-5 years. The recruitment will start in 90 days. Agnipath proposes the recruitment of jawans on a contractual basis for a four-year period followed by compulsory retirement for the most. It would be without gratuity and pension benefits.
