Varun Gauri (senior economist, development economics, and co-head, Mind, Behavior, and Development unit, the World Bank), Varun Gauri gave the opening remarks at the 3ie Delhi Evidence Week conference on 16 April 2018. He spoke on the importance of using behavioural science to inform development programmes and policies. Recognising that people make decisions based on systematic biases and the socio-economic environment, among others, he emphasised the need to understand the context in which development programmes and policies operate. In addition to understanding biases that beneficiaries may have, he explained how behavioural science could help understand biases among policymakers, improve hiring processes and encourage knowledge sharing.

3ie Delhi Evidence Week 2018 was a series of internal and external events from 16-20 April in New Delhi. This was part of the 3ie’s 10-year anniversary celebrations.
