Did you know that in Vietnam, coconut husks—often thought of as waste—can actually be recycled into expensive coir mats? The process begins when the husks are placed on a conveyor belt and fed into a grinder. There, they are broken down to extract both coir dust and fibers. The coir fibers are then dried under the sun.
Once dry, the fibers are fed into a twisting machine to form small ropes. These small ropes are then braided together to create thicker, stronger ropes. The next step is weaving the mat: the thick ropes are stretched out and secured at both ends, then a worker weaves additional strands through them in an alternating pattern and compresses the structure using a wooden board. They also use a wooden mallet to further tighten and secure the weave.
When the mat is finished, it's singed with fire to remove excess fibers, rolled up, and sent to market. Coir mats have a variety of uses—they can be used as anti-slip walkways, to retain soil moisture, prevent erosion, or serve as interior decorations.
