At the end of June, PANYNJ was slated to take out a majority of their aging Orion VII fleet in Newark - both diesel and hybrid - either to retire them completely, or just keep them out of service for urgent repairs, due to serious safety concerns and high repair costs that have come too costly to maintain. In response to this, Academy (Port Authority's main operator) assigned two 2nd Generation Nova Bus LFS' to be painted in a temporary, new PANYNJ livery, labelled to be strictly Newark Airport operated buses. The units retained their same numbers as when they were in the Academy scheme, with the 2007 unit being numbered 2184, and the 2008 unit being 2185. Both units, which originally originated from Canada and were bought from Grand River Transit in 2022, were also accompanied with other Academy buses that mainly comprise of other 2nd Generation Nova Bus LFS'. These units, however, are assigned to ready reserve charter service, and are left blank and largely unschemed. These units are mainly 2006 models and also sport the original styled front for the LFS product line, which they debuted with in 1996 with the introduction of the 1st Generation LFS. However, due to many of Academy's charter buses either not being at ready use and instead being needed elsewhere, or Academy not having enough buses on reserve to fulfill supplemental fleet duties in Newark for PANYNJ. This means that PANYNJ, while also having a number of Proterra BE40 and Proterra ZX5 buses that were ordered in past years, also still needs to keep a few remaining 2007 Orion VII's in the circulation, despite the safety concerns and high mileage that they've accumulated throughout the years. Most of these Orion VII's are fully diesel powered, however, PANYNJ may have also retained at least one hybrid powered unit as well in the pool. With this combination of fleet, this makes for a large and diverse roster of buses that serve Newark International Airport, with a total of 3 different companies, and 3 different fuel types. This is also the only location where you may be able to find originally styled Orion VII buses, Nova Bus LFS, and Proterra BE40/ZX5 buses in regular passenger service together. #portauthority
