We ask the question why, with all our growing insights into the dynamics that led our western societies to unsustainability, our societies find it so difficult to adopt the transition that is needed to attain sustainability. It then describes a number of the potential effects of such a shift on the society’s collective thinking – from long-term to short term thinking, distinguishing between truth and falsehood, the growth of technology and institutions, growth of competency without comprehension, and solutions creating unanticipated problems.
