Anglo-Saxon Avebury

Avebury in the middle of Wiltshire is best known for the massive Neolithic henge and stone circles. But if none of this prehistory had survived then Avebury would still be of considerable interest. Because of what we know about the place in Anglo-Saxon times. Two settlement sites. A hill which was a pagan shrine and tribal meeting place. An early church which evolved into the parish church, leaving some architectural traces. And all located at the frontier of westward Anglo-Saxon settlement then at the north-south divide between Wessex and Mercia.
