Playthrough with the Fatal Fury team. KoF 2001 was the first of two KoF games to be published by Eolith, and this is the worse of two. I think this is one of my least favorite games in the series, and the worst KoF Neo Geo game. The art for the character select, cutscenes etc is really bad most of the time. From what I understand, it was drawn by Nona, who previously worked on the Real Bout Fatal Fury games. The art in those games was good, so I don't know what happened here. He'd do a much better job in the next two games, at least.
The striker system has been overhauled. You can now choose how many characters you want to fight, and how many you want as strikers. Depending on what you choose will effect how many super bars gauges you get, and also effects how much damage you do. So you can risk having just one character fight whilst having three strikers, but do more damage and have more super bars. Or you can have four characters fight and have no strikers at all, but your moves do less damage, and you only get one super gauge. You can change your team settings between fights.
The bosses for this game are two of the worst this series has ever produced. First up is Original Zero, who is basically the Zero from the previous game, but with a different head. Oh and he has three strikers, which he can call on any time. And one of them has an unblockable attack. And he has INFINITE SUPERS. Did SNK not learn anything from Goenitz? Unfortunately after a couple of games of not too bad (by SNK standards) bosses, this marks the start of a bad streak of SNK boss syndrome, which would effect the games for years to come.
Anyway, to beat Zero, the strat I found was to use Terry and spam power waves. Zero will block these most of the time, so you can sit there doing chip damage a lot. If he comes up to you, just wait around and keep blocking, he will sometimes do one of his cape twirl moves that leaves him open after he finishes it. His super move will always get you if Ron hits you with his unblockable, but it does little damage, so it doesn't matter.
And then we have the final boss, Igniz. Zero was bad, this guy is way worse. He may look easy in this video, but trying to fight this guy head-on is absolutely out of the question, you will get destroyed. He has infinite supers (of course), and all of his special moves are completely overpowered. To beat him, you need to try and jump over him, and this will cause him to use his chain blade attack. As he lands, land a quick combo, and then repeat. If you can get this right you should be able to beat him without taking any damage, like I did here.
One more thing I don't like about this game: it has the worst soundtrack in the series. The Art of Fighting team's theme in particular is hilariously bad.
