Biophytum sensitivum, also known as little tree plant, or Mukkootti (in the Malayalam language) is a species of plant in the genus Biophytum of the family Oxalidaceae. It is commonly found in Kerala, wetlands of Nepal, tropical India, and in other Southeast Asian countries and is used for medicinal purposes in Nepal and India. The plant is also a common weed in tropical greenhouses. Investigations have been undertaken into the plant's chemistry, biological activities, and medicinal uses. Similar to Mimosa pudica, the leaflets of Biophytum sensitivum are able to move rapidly in response to mechanical stimulation such as touch.
Chemical analyses have shown that the plant parts are rich in compounds such as amentoflavone, cupressuflavone, and isoorientin. Its extracts are traditionally believed to be antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, radioprotective, chemoprotective, antiangiogenetic, wound-healing, immunomodulatory, anti-diabetic, and cardioprotective in nature.

PLANT DESCRIPTION: A slender erect annual; leaves abruptly pinnate, leaflets opposite, 6-12 pairs, the terminal pair is the largest; flowers yellow with many peduncles; fruits ellipsoid capsules
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES Plant pacifies vitiated kapha, pitta, urinary calculi, wounds, abscesses, asthma and stomachalgia.
It is an important flower for the people of Kerala both for its medicinal values and cultural importance. Mukkutti has been used in traditional folk medicine to treat numerous diseases. In Ayurveda, this little herb Mukkutti is described as good medicine. Mukkutti is used as a tonic and stimulant. It is used for chest complaints, convulsions, Cramps, and inflammatory tumors. Its ash is mixed with lime juice and given for stomach ache. Leaves and roots are styptic, decoction of leaves is given for diabetes, asthma, and phthisis.
Arthralgia, Arthritis, Back Pain, Bone Spur, Bursitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cervical Spondylosis, Degenerative Joint Disease, Degenerative Neck Disease, Fibromyalgia, Leg Cramps, Leg pains, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sprains, Stiff Neck, Tendonitis, and Tennis Elbow are also treated using mukkutti in Ayurveda.
