Several areas in New Delhi recorded extreme temperatures with mercury touching 50 degrees Celsius as a heatwave swept across North India. The maximum temperature in the national capital was recorded at Mungeshpur and Narela, with the mercury touching 49.9 degrees Celsius, which was 9 degrees above normal. Najafgarh also recorded 49.8 degrees. Delhi's primary observatory in Safdurjung recorded the overall temperature at 48.5 degrees, five notches above normal. This heat wave is being caused by a deadly combination of air temperature, land surface temperature and relative humidity, which leads to acute thermal discomfort and heat stress in cities. Cities like Delhi have registered a significant increase in their built-up areas and concretisation, this contributes to the urban heat island effect. Concrete absorbs heat during the day but cannot emit infrared heat, causing the heat to be trapped.
