antimicrobial resistance means an organism loses its sensitivity to an antimicrobial drug
resistance can be natural or acquired
natural resistance means - the organism is intrinsically resistant to the antibacterial drug due to the genetic makeup or structure or physiological state of the microorganism
eg. mycoplasma is intrinsically resistant to betalactams due to absence of cell wall.
this is not clinically significant

acquired resistance is transferred via mutation or horizontal gene transfer.
transfer of resistance horizonatlly is a major concern as it results in rapid spread of resistance and often results in multi drug resistance.

the antimicrobial stewardship team includes an ID specialist, pharmacologist , microbilogist and epidemiologist with a technician

preauthorisation and formulary restriction
