Shamima Begum, the schoolgirl who left the UK to join Islamic State in Syria, has lost the latest round of her legal battle with the Home Office over its decision to remove her British citizenship.

Begum, who was born in the UK and raised in Bethnal Green, east London, was barred from entering the country and had her citizenship stripped in 2019 by Sir Sajid Javid, then home secretary, shortly after she was found by The Times in a refugee camp.

After a special immigration appeals commission (Siac) ruling decided to uphold his decision, her lawyers took the case to the Court of Appeal last year arguing that the Home Office had failed to consider if Begum, now 24, had been groomed or trafficked – an apparent breach of anti-slavery law.

The three judges in the Court of Appeal have now ruled in the Home Office’s favour.
