Spondylosis symptoms depend on the involved spinal segment and the severity of the disease. The main cause of spondylosis is arthritis of the spinal joints. Because the inside cartilage that covers the joints doesn't have nerve endings, the initial onset of spondylosis often doesn't produce symptoms.

The disease begins to manifest its symptoms only when the joints of the spine are heavily damaged.
Due to thinning of the diseased cartilage of the spinal joints, the space between the vertebrae decreases, causing damage to the nerve roots.

In this case, symptoms of the disease are pain in the affected region of the spine and in areas innervated by this segment. Symptoms most often occur with physical activity and with bending.
Symptoms may include loss of sensation in the extremities and muscle weakness.

In severe spondylosis, in the late stages, osteophytes occur. Pain then becomes permanent and, in addition to other symptoms, signs of dysfunction of internal organs occur, such as the loss of control of the rectum, and loss of bladder control. Paralysis and paresis may also occur.
